1. Who we are
This policy is issued by L&M Technologies Inc., operating as Rangetel, Unit 7, 2821 – 3 Avenue NE, Calgary, AB T2A 7P3, Canada ("Rangetel", "we", "us"). It covers our website at rangetel.com, the Rangetel tracking platform on the web, the Rangetel phone apps, our trackers and the services around them.
Our Privacy Officer is accountable for how we handle personal information and can be reached at support@rangetel.com.
2. Our two roles
For our own customers, website visitors and people who contact us, we decide what is collected and why. In privacy law terms we are the organisation in control (the "controller" under EU and UK law).
For the data our customers' trackers and users put into the platform (vehicle and asset locations, trips, sensor readings, driver records), we act on our customer's behalf (a "service provider" under Canadian law, a "processor" under EU and UK law). The customer, usually a business, decides what to track and who can see it. If you drive or carry equipment that a Rangetel customer tracks, your employer or the organisation that owns the tracker is responsible for telling you about it and, where the law requires it, getting your consent. Please send questions or requests about that data to them; if they ask us to, we will help them answer.
3. What we collect
When you visit our website
- Technical data your browser sends every website: IP address, browser and device type, the pages requested and the time. Our servers keep these logs briefly for security and troubleshooting.
- Usage statistics. We count visits with privacy-friendly analytics that we host ourselves in Canada. It uses no cookies, does not track you across sites, and does not store your IP address or anything else that identifies you; we only see totals such as pages viewed and referring sites.
- A bot check on the sign-in, password reset and quote forms (Cloudflare Turnstile, see section 7), which protects accounts and stops spam.
- What you send us through the quote or contact form: your name, company, email, phone number, fleet size, interests and message.
When you or your company uses the platform
- Account information: name, email, phone, role, the account you belong to, preferences and settings, and your password (stored only as a one-way hash).
- Sign-in and security records: when you sign in, from which IP address, the approximate location derived from it, and the browser or app used. We use these to protect accounts and to spot misuse.
- Tracker and fleet data: location, speed, heading, altitude, ignition and movement, odometer and engine hours, fuel and temperature readings, engine fault codes, the vehicle identification number (VIN), and events such as speeding, geofence visits and harsh driving. Tracked units are usually vehicles and equipment; where a tracker is carried by a person, or a vehicle is assigned to a driver, this data can be linked to that person.
- Driver records that a customer enters: name, phone, email, licence details and driver card identifiers.
- Content you create: geofences, places, alert rules, maintenance records, reports and notes.
- Emails we send you (alerts, reports, account notices) and whether they were delivered, opened or clicked, so we can tell whether important notices are reaching you.
When you use the Rangetel phone app
- A notification token for your phone, so alerts can reach it, along with the app version and phone type.
- The phone's location, only if you turn on phone tracking (for example TrackIt Phone). The app asks for permission first, may collect location in the background while tracking is on, and you can turn it off at any time in the app or in your phone's settings.
When you buy from us
- Billing contact and address, what you bought, your plan and invoices. Card payments are handled by our payment processor; we never see or store full card numbers.
4. How we use it
- To provide the service: show live positions and history, send the alerts and reports you set up, run maintenance reminders, and keep your settings.
- To support you: answer questions, troubleshoot trackers and fix problems.
- To keep the service and your account secure: detect suspicious sign-ins, prevent abuse and investigate incidents.
- To bill for the service and keep the records tax and accounting law requires.
- To send service messages you need, such as changes to your account, security notices and changes to these policies.
- To understand, in aggregate, how the website and platform are used so we can improve them.
- To meet legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.
We do not sell personal information, share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, or use tracker data to build advertising profiles.
5. Legal bases (EU and UK)
Where EU or UK data protection law applies, we rely on: performance of a contract (providing the service you or your company signed up for); legitimate interests (security, fraud prevention, aggregate analytics, improving the service and business-to-business communications, always balanced against your rights); legal obligation (tax, accounting and lawful requests); and consent where we ask for it (for example phone location tracking), which you can withdraw at any time. For tracker and fleet data processed for our customers, the customer determines the legal basis.
6. Who we share it with
- People in your own account, according to the access your account's managers set.
- Service providers who help us run Rangetel, listed below. They may use the information only to provide their service to us, under contracts that require them to protect it.
- People you choose to share with, for example when you send someone a live location link.
- Authorities, when the law requires it, for example a court order. We disclose only what is required.
- A buyer or successor, if Rangetel's business is sold or merged, under the protections of this policy.
7. Service providers
| Provider | What they do for us | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Web Services | Servers, databases and file storage for the platform and website; email delivery (Amazon SES); text-message alerts (Amazon SNS) | Canada |
| Map providers you choose: Google Maps, Microsoft Bing Maps, HERE, Mapbox, MapTiler, TomTom, OpenStreetMap | Map images, traffic and Street View. Your browser or app loads these directly from the provider, which receives your IP address and the map area viewed | United States, Europe and elsewhere |
| OpenStreetMap Foundation (Nominatim) | Turning coordinates into street addresses and searching addresses. Our servers send only the coordinates or the search text, not who is asking | United Kingdom / Europe |
| Expo, with Apple Push Notification service and Google Firebase Cloud Messaging | Delivering notifications to the phone app | United States |
| Cloudflare Turnstile | Checking that sign-in, password reset and quote forms are sent by a person, not a bot. Cloudflare receives your IP address, browser and device information and how you interact with the check, and uses it only to tell people from bots | United States and worldwide |
| IPinfo | Approximate location of sign-in IP addresses, for account security | United States |
| U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (vPIC) | Decoding a vehicle's VIN into make, model and year. Only the VIN is sent | United States |
| Stripe | Card payments and subscription billing | Canada and United States |
We will update this list when we add or change providers. Ask us for the current list at any time.
8. Where it is stored
Rangetel stores personal information in Amazon Web Services data centres in Canada (Canada Central, Montréal, and Canada West, Calgary). Some of the providers above process limited information outside Canada, as shown. Canada is recognised by the European Commission and by the United Kingdom as providing adequate protection for personal information, so information from the EU and UK can be stored here without additional safeguards. Where a provider processes EU or UK personal information in another country, we rely on approved safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.
9. How long we keep it
- Location history, trips and events: up to 2 years, after which they are deleted, unless the customer that owns the tracker asks us to keep them for a shorter or longer period, or a contract says otherwise.
- Account information: while the account is open, then deleted within 90 days after it closes.
- Sign-in, security and email delivery records: up to 2 years.
- Enquiries through our website: up to 2 years after our last contact, unless you become a customer.
- Invoices and billing records: for as long as tax and accounting law requires (in Canada, generally six years).
- Server logs: a few weeks.
10. Security
We protect personal information with safeguards suited to its sensitivity, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) for the website, platform and apps, passwords stored only as one-way hashes, databases on private networks that are not reachable from the internet, access limited to the staff and providers who need it, and records of sign-ins and administrative changes. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify the people affected and the authorities as the law requires.
11. Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to tell you what personal information we hold about you, to give you a copy, to correct it, and to delete it, and you can withdraw consent you have given. We will answer within 30 days. We may need to confirm your identity first, and the law sometimes lets or requires us to keep information (for example invoices). For tracker and fleet data, we will pass your request to the customer responsible and help them answer it.
Canada
You have the rights described in the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act and other provincial laws, including access, correction and withdrawal of consent. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta.
European Union, European Economic Area, United Kingdom and Switzerland
You also have the right to restrict or object to our processing, including processing based on legitimate interests, and to data portability. You can complain to the data protection authority where you live or work.
United States
Depending on your state (for example California, Colorado, Virginia or Texas), you may have the right to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose, to access, correct and delete it, and to opt out of its sale, sharing for targeted advertising, or profiling. We do not sell or share personal information for targeted advertising, and we do not use it for profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects. We will not treat you differently for using these rights. You can use an authorised agent, and if we decline a request you can appeal by replying to our answer.
To use any of these rights, email support@rangetel.com.
12. Children
Rangetel is a business and personal tracking service and is not intended for children to use themselves. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 16. If a parent or guardian uses a Rangetel tracker to locate a child, that parent or guardian is the account holder and is responsible for that use. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
13. Emails and marketing
We send service emails that are part of using Rangetel, such as alerts and reports you set up and notices about your account. We send marketing emails only with your consent, as Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation and other laws require, and every marketing email includes a way to unsubscribe. Details you send through our quote form are used to answer your enquiry.
14. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when our practices change. We will post the new version here with a new effective date and, for significant changes, tell customers by email or in the platform before they take effect.
